A small confession and a little something to hold you over.

I did it. I finished a new thriller book. It’s not Psalm of Lies—I put it on pause while I finished this book.

Though I have finished the editing the first chapter of the new book, tentatively called Hillside Witness, I have a long way to go to finish editing the 93,000 words I have written—473 pages.

And I’m not being dramatic when I say this book nearly skinned me alive. I’ve written about a thousand dead bodies in my lifetime of journalism and East Texas family stories, but apparently nothing unnerves me quite like a fictional woman staring into the woods at midnight.

The chapter is done, polished, and sitting here like a live wire.
And yes—protagonist Holly Parish has secrets. Old ones. Buried ones. The kind that don’t stay put.

I’m not posting the chapter itself yet.
Some places I plan to submit require unpublished work, and I’m not about to disqualify myself before I even get to the starting line. But I did want you to have something, because you’re here, you believed in me early, and that matters more than I let on.

So here’s what I can give you today:
