I feel like I can relate to your protagonist. I’m a teacher too (English lit for ELLs) trying to survive and complete the work responsibilities day by day. But when an opportunity knocks on the door that I want to say “yes!” to, I have to think about it for a moment. I have to consider the pros and cons. I like that your protagonist was still able to win in the end. She was able to escape from the teaching routine for a moment and give herself satisfaction by doing what she enjoyed: writing. And writing a piece that got published! I enjoyed your story :)

Thanks. There’s soooo much more to this story. I was the first reporter to get the story of the state’s wealthiest families paying the least amount of taxes. For George W. Bush, who was governor, his home in Rainbo club was at the time the only home he had to pay taxes on (he ran for governor on the platform of cutting property taxes). I just ran into Rainbo Club’s former caretaker, who had a lawsuit against Rainbo and George W. Bush personally, after refusal to pay a worker’s comp case. He approached me and asked if I was a reporter. He looped in his attorney. They gave me depositions. I went to the tax office and grabbed the list of folks who had homes in the two clubs and checked tax rates. It was shocking, to say the least. Even the owner at the time of this very land we live on was benefitted from this little known private tax exemption. Anyway, I wrote that story, was threatened by W’s lawyer at the time, but had the backing of the Texas Observer. It was a wild time.
